CENSUS: SEATTLE IS THE FASTEST-GROWING BIG CITY IN THE U.S.
Last year, Seattle grew faster than any other major American city, according to population estimates released by the Census Bureau. From July 1, 2012 to July 1, 2013, Seattle grew by 2.8 percent, the highest rate among the 50 most-populous U.S. cities. Seattle added nearly 18,000 residents in the one-year period, bringing its population to about 652,000. According to Seattle’s Office of Economic Development, the city added nearly 15,000 new jobs between 2012 and 2013. Seattle became the nation’s 21st biggest city and is within striking distance of returning to the top 20 cities for the first time since 1960.
CHARTS: HERE’S HOW IMPORTANT THE TECH INDUSTRY IS TO WASHINGTON STATE
More than 460,000 people were employed in Washington’s technology-based industries in 2013, representing 14 percent of total employment and accounting for $55 billion in payroll. With multiplier effects, the tech industry supports 1.4 million jobs. In addition, for every 100 tech jobs in the state, another 200 jobs are created in industries such as retail, law, and finance. These results were presented on Monday where more than 700 people gathered at the Technology Alliance’s annual State of Technology Luncheon, a showcase of the region’s technology strength.
